A PTA member told the Senate Standing Committee on Cabinet Division that the PTA does not impose or collect mobile phone taxes. ProPakistani reported it on 21 August 2026.
What PTA told the committee
PTA Member Enforcement Dr. Khawar Siddique Khokhar said the registration system does not distinguish between new and used phones for tax purposes.
The FBR collects the tax and sets the amount linked to each phone through its IMEI number. The National Tariff Commission determines the tariff.
Customs valuation and the duty schedule
FBR officials said customs authorities use different valuation methods for new and used phones, and calculate duties under Article 25 of the Customs Act.
The report adds that the previous federal budget set a 20% annual reduction in customs duty on mobile phones, running until 2030. It reports no new tax rate.
Committee Chairman Senator Rana Mahmood-ul-Hassan said the GSMA warned that existing mobile phone taxes could affect 5G rollout and performance.
